Tips on How to Deal with Snake Bites from SCWEMS Director

As the warm weather arrives and people head out to explore the great outdoors in Wyoming, the risk of encountering a venomous snake increases. Rattlesnakes are the most common type of venomous snake found in the northern parts of Carbon County, and if you are bitten, it is important to stay calm. Stayton Mosbey, the director of South-Central Wyoming Emergency Medical Services, advises against applying a tourniquet or using ice on the wound. Instead, he recommends calling 911 and remaining still while waiting for help to arrive. Memorial Hospital of Carbon County carries the rattlesnake anti-venom, CroFab, but limits their inventory due to its price and shelf life.

As the warm weather arrives, the call of the outdoors becomes stronger. However, as we venture into the wilderness, we must be aware of the dangers that lurk. Rattlesnakes are the most common venomous snakes that one may encounter in the northern parts of Carbon County. In case of a snake bite, Stayton Mosbey, the director of South-Central Wyoming Emergency Medical Services, advises to stay calm and call 911. Applying a tourniquet or cold compress may worsen the situation. It is best to sit still and breathe deeply to prevent the venom from spreading faster.

Attempting to capture the snake after a bite is not recommended as it could result in another bite. Mosbey advises calmly backing away and calling for help. SCWEMS typically responds to one rattlesnake bite a year, and depending on the severity of the bite, the victim may need to be transported out of the county for treatment.

Memorial Hospital of Carbon County carries the rattlesnake anti-venom, CroFab. However, due to its price and shelf life, they limit their inventory to six doses, which is enough to treat one grown adult. Saratoga’s North Platte Valley Medical Center does not have CroFab in its inventory but can transport it via the Wyoming Highway Patrol from other hospitals in the area if necessary.

In conclusion, as we explore the wilderness, it is important to be prepared for any potential dangers, including venomous snakes. Knowing how to react in case of a snake bite can make all the difference in preventing further harm.
